Have a day to spend in the Texan capital city of Austin? Here is how to spend your time.
THINGS TO DO
Texas State Capitol:
One of the prettiest State Capitol buildings, and it is certainly worth a visit. Wander the grounds, go into the senate chambers, look at the portraits of the Texan governors through the years and learn about the portrait crisis for when they run out of bays for new portraits.
Alamo Drafthouse:
I didn’t go here on my trip, since we have one where I live. However, this is a great place to catch a movie (If you are not interested in the latest releases, check out their movie parties!), and enjoy your food and drink being brought to your seat.

Zilker Park:
If you want to surround yourself with some greenery, head to Zilker Park and go for a walk around the Lady Bird Lake, check out the botanical garden, or simply nap in the shade under a tree in the park.

Bats at Congress Bridge:
Every evening at sunset, watch a colony of 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under Congress bridge. Get here early so you can find parking, and bring a chair or a blanket to sit on and people watch until the bats come out.
WHERE TO EAT

Torchy’s Tacos:
Again, somewhere I didn’t go to in Austin because we have it at home. But I highly recommend the chips and queso, as well as the corn.

Elizabeth Street Cafe:
A Vietnamese cafe and a French bakery combined in a place that will make your instagram dreams come true. Where else can you have a comforting bowl of Pho and follow it up with an eclair for dessert?
Here for longer? Other places to check out include:
-
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower centre (especially if it is bluebonnet season)
-
Check out the live music scene. See what’s playing when you’re in town here. https://do512.com/events/austin-music/today
-
Pick up some interesting finds at Uncommon Objects.
