While in most restaurants in Hilo (and in Hawaii in general) will have at least one vegetarian option on the menu, a cheese pizza or spaghetti in tomato sauce can get boring rather quickly. But with a little digging, you can find some great vegetarian food in Hilo. Keep reading to see what my top pics for vegetarian restaurants in Hilo are!
Pineapples Restaurant
This very popular restaurant is easily recognisable by the long line of pineapples you can see near the entrance. The reason for this becomes obvious as soon as your realise that the signature drink of this restaurant is the Pineapple Pow, a delicious ice cold slushy (either with or without alcohol) served in a pineapple.
It’s not just about the drinks either, and I was very happy to see that they had a separate vegetarian/vegan menu (which you will have to request), with a decent variety in their options. I went for the veggie wrap with macademia pesto, which also came with a side. The portions were decent too, between my drink and my main I was pretty full by the time we left!

Sombats Thai Cuisine
Sombats Thai is only open for dinner, but is a great place if you want to grab a quick meal before collapsing into bed (or order for it to be delivered to your room on a particularly lazy evening!). The restaurant has a portion of its menu dedicated to vegetarian specials, and be warned – the portions are huge! I ordered the vegetable curry, which was deliciously spicy and was big enough to last me multiple meals. Would definitely recommend, especially if you are craving something spicy and comforting.

Vibe Cafe
Not only is the cafe very instagrammable (something that never hurts when I am looking for places to eat!), but the entire menu is vegetarian or vegan. I was super excited to try the Loco Moco here. This is a traditional Hawaiian dish that consists of a burger patty, a fried egg and gravy on a bed of rice. As you can imagine, this not really a vegetarian friendly meal, but at Vibe they make a vegan version of the dish which was delicious and filling.

If you are not in the mood for a Loco Moco, I can also highly recommend their pulled jackfruit tacos which were heavenly! From what we could see the service was fairly hit or miss, but the food more than made up for it in my opinion.

Cafe Pesto
If you’re in the mood for a slightly more upscale dining experience, head to Cafe Pesto. The cafe serves a wide range of foods like soups, sandwiches, pastas and pizzas. While some of the items are vegetarian by themselves, certain items on the menu can also be modified to be vegan or gluten free as required. It’s also a great place if you are not in the mood for a full meal and want something on the lighter side. Or to get a hot drink and watch the world go by.
